Canola Seed Testing

SGS is expert in testing canola in both germination and herbicide trait tests. We utilize primarily the blotter method for canola germination and herbicide bioassay tests. Mid-West Seed Services, which is now part of the SGS Group, have developed herbicide bioassays for Roundup Ready®, Liberty® and Clearfield® canola traits utilizing tray and blotter testing methods.

Mechanical Purity and Noxious Weed Examinations
Mechanical Purity and Noxious Weed Examinations are conducted in accordance with the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) “Rules for Testing Seeds”; Canadian and ISTA tests are also available. Submit a 100 gram sample.

GMO Testing
GMO Testing is available on canola. A 2,400 seed bioassay test is run for either Roundup® or LibertyLink™  traits.

Sand Emergence Test
Sand Emergence Test is also available as a germination test on canola. This test is useful for treated seed since it provides uniform water uptake and allows leaching of treatment within the sand media. Sand will facilitate root growth on damaged seedlings and tends to suppress fungal growth related to seed coat infections. Duration is seven days.

Herbicide Trait Tests
Herbicide Trait Tests have been developed by MWSS for Roundup Ready®, Liberty® and Clearfield® canola. These bioassays take 7 to 10 days to complete and are conducted on 400 seeds with trait and nontrait check seeds. Both the  trait and germination percentages are reported. The average trait percentage of the 800 seeds will be reported.

Cold Tests
Cold Tests are useful for evaluating canola seed vigor levels. The test is conducted for seven days at 10C followed by a four-day germination test at 20-30C. Submit at least 25 grams.

Accelerated Aging Test
Accelerated Aging has been useful as a vigor test for canola. The seed is aged at 41C for 48 hours prior to planting under normal germination test conditions. Submit at least 25 grams.
