SGS is experienced in testing rice in both germination and herbicide trait tests. We utilize both the towel and blotter tray method for rice germination tests.
Mechanical Purity and Red Rice Examinations
Mechanical Purity and Red Rice Examinations are conducted in accordance with the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) “Rules for Testing Seeds”; ISTA tests are also available. Red rice examinations are conducted following hull removal. All-states noxious weed examinations are also available. Submit a 500 gram sample.  Top
Standard Germination Tests
Standard Germination Tests are conducted in accordance with the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) “Rules for Testing Seeds”; ISTA tests are also available. Submit a 250 gram sample for these tests. Towel method is routinely conducted. Top Sand Emergence Test
Sand Emergence test is also available as a germination test on rice. This test would be most useful when seed lots have fungal infections such as Fusarium spp. The sand provides uniform water uptake, facilitates root growth on damaged seedlings and tends to suppress fungal growth related to seed coat infections. The duration is seven days. Top Herbicide Trait Tests
Mid-West Seed Services, which is now part of the SGS Group, have developed a herbicide bioassay test for Clearfield® rice. It takes seven to ten days to complete and is conducted on 400 seeds with trait and nontrait check seeds on every tray. Both the trait and germination percentages are reported. The average trait percentage of the 800 seeds will be reported. Top Cold Tests
Cold Tests are useful for evaluating rice seed vigor levels. The test is conducted for 5 days at 30 C followed by a four day germination test at 20-30C. Submit at least 250 grams. Top Accelerated Aging Test
Accelerated Aging has been useful as a vigor test for rice. The seed is aged at 41C for 72 hours prior to planting under normal germination test conditions. Submit at least 250 grams. Top Tetrazolium Test
Tetrazolium Test is a quick viability test completed within 24 to 48 hours. Two hundred seeds are prepared and stained with tetrazolium solution and evaluated for viability. Submit 250 grams. Top
