Studying What is In and On the Seed
New innovations are continuously occurring within the seed industry. These innovations performed on seed are both internal and external. To bring new seed amendments to market, various product quality measurements must be determined including seed flow ability and seed safety.
SGS is on the forefront of test method development; not only for evaluating internal seed enhancements such as herbicide trait, but also for assessing seed quality and vigour. SGS has the experience and expertise to perform and/or develop the necessary tests to evaluate product performance and can assist your company by providing quality third party laboratory evaluation.
SGS LABORATORY RESEARCH SERVICES
Seed Safety and Storage Trials for Seed Amendments Seed Amendment Studies including protectants, polymers and coatings are evaluated for performance, safety to the seed and storability. We can accommodate pretreated studies or apply treatments at our laboratory. Every step of your project from study initiation to data analysis is crafted to your specifications including: study design, replication, result summary, statistical analysis, graphical representation and final report format. We have worked with a wide range of species and test methods to aid companies in evaluating performance in both short and long term storability studies. Utilizing the expertise from all areas of SGS-MWSS we produce timely and accurate results. Tests include: standard warm germination, tray cold, saturated cold, accelerated aging, conductivity, tetrazolium, cotton cool test, and sand emergence. For additional test method details please select a crop under the Seed Testing tab above or call to setup a study design. |
Seed Quality Assurance Method Development In many situations, methods are available to test the characteristics you are evaluating, but in some cases new methods must be developed to suit your testing needs. We have experience in developing tests for newly developed herbicide traits, as well as, vigor evaluation and dormancy breaking methods. SGS MWSS can assist you in developing tests to evaluate your seed. |
Seed Treatment Dust Off Studies Seed amendments need to be evaluated for the amount of particles or dust that can be removed from the seed. Great amounts of dust can be produced when treated seed is agitated causing a possible safety issue. Determining dust off rates is an important step in evaluating characteristics and usability of your new product. |
Seed Treatment Trial Study Preparation Take some of the variation out of your field trials by having SGS MWSS perform your treating, seed counts, packaging and shipping seed to the field locations for your field trial. We can also work in conjunction with SGS Alvey Research to supply a field trail location. The seed safety and storability evaluations can be preformed here at the SGS MWSS laboratory. Our seed treatment area is equipped with a Hege™ batch treater as well as a 20-50 pound (9-23 kg.) batch treater to allow for large or small treatment studies. |
Plantability/Flowability Assessments Proper movement and accuracy of seed planting is necessary in today’s agricultural world. With all of the new treatments applied to seeds, some of a seed’s ability to move smoothly through the planting process may be limited or decreased. The testing of a seed’s ability to flow is an important step to be taken before the product enters the market. |
Herbicide Trait Detection Method Development We are always interested in new bioassay test method development. We have developed herbicide bioassay tests for canola, corn, cotton, rice, soybean, sugarbeets, sunflowers, and wheat. These bioassay tests, performed in a laboratory environment, provide both germination and trait percentages, utilize negative and positive trait checks and are typically completed in seven to ten days. Commonly, 400 seeds are evaluated per test. |
Field Research Services SGS offers a complete package of laboratory and field services. SGS MWSS will initiate your field study, provide treating and packaging services and coordinate with SGS Alvey for field testing. Visit www.sgs.com/cropservices for more information. |
Seed Treatment Application Verification Need to know chemical application rates? SGS MWSS provides HPLC analysis on various agricultural chemicals. We will also develop a methodology to evaluate your chemicals. Learn more about how SGS ensures seed quality by verifying the proper application of a various seed treatments. |
