Tips for Sampling Bulk and Bagged Seed Corn

SGS Mid-West Seed Services, Inc. (SGS MWSS) offers the following tips for sampling both bulk and bagged seed corn.

  1. Use sampling equipment that will take an accurate sample. The width of the slot should be 2 times the diameter of the seed.
  2. Make sure you sample from enough places in the seed lot so the sample represents the seed lot.
  3. If sampling vertically, use a compartmentalized probe that does not allow the seed to flow from the top to the bottom.
  4. Sample seed safely.
  5. Send sample to SGS Mid-West Seed Services for analysis!

If you are exporting seed, a Blue International Seed Sample certificate or Orange International Seed Lot certificate can assist in a seamless movement of seed through the border. For Orange certificates, a person needs to be trained in sampling by a SGS Mid-West Seed Services Inc Seed Sampler workshop. On October 21-22, there will be a Seed Sampler workshop in which a member of your team can be trained to help with your exporting system. Contact Terry Lemme at 877-692-7611 or go to the Seed Sampler Training Workshop for more information.
